BEAUTIFUL FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY IN EDINBURGH

Heart-bursting photographs of your family captured during fun, relaxed and natural photoshoots

Why we need family portraits

Photographs are so much more than just pictures. An amazing family photography session isn’t just about capturing a posed photograph for Grandparents. It’s about taking time to document your family history, memorialise your children’s childhood, capture your love as a family.

Time really does fly… One minute you’ve got a newborn in your arms, and the next – secondary school, then college. Please make sure you take time out to capture those memories, all the precious moments and ages. Take time to document your family's love for each other and put it on your wall or in an album to be treasured.
the photos are phenomenal
I could not be happier with the photos that followed our session. The morning of the shoot was a particularly frosty -6°C, Rebecca very quickly struck up a warm and friendly rapport with my 3-year-old. It helped that Rebecca clearly knew the location well, and the best spots for a great backdrop. The session felt like a nice, crisp walk among beautiful surroundings. The photos are phenomenal and have only increased my admiration for the photography profession. Put your smartphone camera away and book a session with Rebecca, you will not regret it!

What you’ll love about working with me

I totally understand how crazy day to day life can be – I’m a mum of three! Whether you’re in the throes of toddlerhood or dealing with the rollercoaster of raising teens – I understand how intense it can be. The parenting journey is such a bizarre mix of LONG nights are really very quick years. Blink and they’re on the way to college.

One day you will be thankful that you took time to capture these memories, so you could enjoy them for years to come.

However, inviting a stranger into your busy life is a big thing! You want the whole thing to be easy, relaxed and fun. You want everyone to enjoy the process, and you want to look back on your family photoshoot with really happy memories.

You need a family photographer who totally understands if the house is a disaster zone, your teen isn’t cooperating, or your toddler is having a meltdown.

I am that family photographer. Every single client who works with me says that what they loved most was my relaxed, warm and fun nature. I enter your family like a close friend – someone who accepts you exactly where you’re at, someone who brings calm and experience. If everyone needs someone to hype them up and make them laugh – I’ll be your comedian. If everyone needs reassurance and a slower pace – I’m the queen of calm.

A Family Photoshoot with me is always easy and fun, leaving you with stunning heart-grabbing images that you’ll be proud to hang on your walls.

What to expect from your Edinburgh family photography session

Booking and preparing for your photography session

If you’d like to book a family photography session with me, there are a couple of ways we can do it.

If you already know you’d like to go ahead, you can simply book your session online. You’ll be able to choose between a studio session at my lovely, relaxed studio in Linlithgow - an easy trip from Edinburgh - or an on-location session somewhere that feels right for your family.

That could be at home, outdoors somewhere you love, in the city, or somewhere with a bit more space to run around. We can work out what will suit your family best.

If you’re not quite sure what you need yet, or you’d simply rather have a chat before booking, you can schedule a video or phone call with me instead.

It’s very relaxed and completely non-salesy. We’ll talk about your family, what you’d love from your photographs, whether studio or location would suit you best, how everything works and what the investment looks like. You can ask me anything you need to, and then go away and have a think. There’s absolutely no expectation to make a decision on the call.

Once you’ve booked, I’ll send you everything you need to help you feel properly prepared for your session. That includes guidance on what to wear, inspiration if you need it, and a handy checklist so you’re not trying to remember seventeen different things on the morning of your photoshoot (nobody needs that).

And I don’t just send you a pile of information and leave you to it. I’ll be here to help with any questions along the way, and we’ll check in again before your session to make sure everything feels clear and you know exactly what to expect.

Whether we’re photographing your family in the studio or somewhere that feels like home to you, the aim is the same: to make the whole experience feel easy, relaxed and genuinely enjoyable.

What type of family photo session is right for you? Studio, at home or outdoors?

What type of family photo session is right for you? Studio, at home or outdoors?

One of the lovely things about family photography is that there isn’t one ‘right’ place to do it.

Your session can take place in my relaxed studio in Linlithgow, in your own home, or outdoors at one of the many gorgeous locations in and around Edinburgh. Each gives us something slightly different, and we can choose whatever feels most like your family.

A studio family photoshoot

My studio in Linlithgow is a calm, private space where we can shut the door on the outside world and just concentrate on you. It’s relaxed and welcoming rather than formal or stuffy, with plenty of room for children to move around and be themselves.

Studio sessions are brilliant if you love a clean, simple look to your photographs, if the Scottish weather isn’t particularly appealing (quite possible), or if you’d simply prefer to know exactly where you’re going and what to expect.

And although the studio is in Linlithgow rather than Edinburgh itself, it’s an easy journey from the city and gives us a lovely dedicated space to create your photographs without having to worry about what the weather has planned for us.

A family photoshoot at home

Home can be a particularly lovely choice if you want photographs that capture a little bit of what family life feels like right now.

It’s familiar, comfortable and full of things that belong to you. You can bake cookies, make dens, play dress-up, snuggle on the sofa or simply potter about together while I photograph what unfolds.

And please don’t feel you need to have a perfectly styled, super-tidy house. You really don’t. One good window and a bit of space is usually all I need. (And you should see the state of my house half the time.)

An outdoor photoshoot in Edinburgh or surrounds

Then, of course, there’s the great outdoors.

Edinburgh gives us so much to play with — beaches, parks, woodland, lochs, beautiful city streets and all those wonderful corners that feel unmistakably Edinburgh.

Outdoor sessions are particularly good for children who like to move. There’s space to explore, run around, play and forget slightly about the fact that there’s a camera nearby. I’ll gently guide things when we need to, but there’s plenty of freedom for your family to just be together.

So, which should you choose?

Whichever feels most comfortable and most you.

You don’t need to have it all worked out before you get in touch, either. If you know exactly what you want, you can go ahead and book your session online. If you’re torn between studio, home or outdoors - or have absolutely no idea where would work best - book a call with me and we can talk it through together.

And if a combination makes sense for your family, we can chat about that too.

The location is really just the backdrop. What matters most is creating somewhere you can relax, be yourselves and come away with photographs that feel like your family.

How will the family photoshoot run on the day?

We’ll start by giving everyone a little time to settle in. I’ll have a chat, get to know the rest of your family and, importantly, let the children get used to me before I start pointing a camera in their direction.

If we’re in the studio, there’s plenty of time to get comfortable in the space before we begin. At home, I’ll have a little look around for the best light and places to photograph. And if we’re outdoors, we’ll usually go for a wander together, stopping to photograph along the way.

However we do it, there’s no expectation for anyone to suddenly switch into ‘photoshoot mode’ and perform for the camera.

I’ll make sure we get a few lovely looking-at-the-camera photographs (because grandparents do tend to like those), but much of the session is about capturing what happens in between - the cuddles, laughter, silliness, little looks and all those wonderfully familiar ways you are together.

Every family is different, and that’s rather the point. I’m not trying to make you look like somebody else’s family. I want to create photographs that feel like *yours*.

And please don’t worry about knowing what to do. I’ll guide you throughout the whole session - where to stand, what to do with your hands, how to interact and when to just forget about me and enjoy yourselves.

You’ll never be left standing awkwardly wondering what on earth you’re supposed to be doing. I’ve got you.

But won’t it be awkward? I’m not a big fan of being in front of the camera.

My superpower as a professional photographer is my natural ability to make everyone feel totally comfortable in front of the camera. I provide loads of ideas ahead of the session to help you prepare, and during every step of the photo session, I guide you in exactly what to do and how to do it. You’ll never be left to wonder how to stand, move or interact.

I’m a recovering photo-avoider myself, so I completely understand. I will be there to help and reassure you at all times.

All my clients come away from their session saying how easy it was, how much fun they had and how much they love the special moments I’ve captured.

brought tears to my eyes
I can’t recommend Rebecca Holmes Photography highly enough! She was wonderful, she made it so easy and relaxing. I was able to feed my baby when needed, our toddler had time to run about, there was no rush or posing, yet the photographs are simply stunning. So natural and beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes when I saw them for the first time. We will definitely be engaging Rebecca in future!

Why I do what I do

I’m an award-winning professional photographer with over two decades of experience taking photographs professionally… (why thank you – no, I don’t look that old). I’m an Aussie who moved to Edinburgh to marry a Scot, and who now calls Scotland home. I’m also a wife and mum of three, who loves both good coffee and tasty Scottish gin. I am warm, fun, gentle and really easy going.

I would spend hours as a child pouring over family photo albums and picture frames. I loved learning about who people were, how they lived, who they loved. For me, photographs have always had a magical quality about them… They have the ability to remind us, transport us, capture our imagination and fill our hearts with joy.

I love nothing more than capturing candid, beautiful moments of love between the people I photograph.

Just below are some photos of me and my tribe. I can’t wait to capture your family story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whatever family means to you! Parents, kids, furbabies, besties… I’d love to meet you all!
It’s Scotland… It well might! Fear not, I operate a very flexible schedule to account for sudden changes in the weather. I’ll keep in touch with you by text in the days leading up to your session, and if we need to – we’ll reschedule.
I have three and none of them are angels, so please don’t worry. I have LOADS of experience in getting kids to engage and enjoy the session. And anyway, grumpy kids make for the most hilarious of photos!
Absolutely! Please do! Bring Aunts, Uncles and cousins too! I LOVE an extended family session! It’s a great way to get photographs of the whole family, whilst enjoying a lovely day out. Best choose one of the longer sessions though so we've plenty of time.
