BEAUTIFUL FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY IN EDINBURGH

Heart-bursting photographs of your family captured
during fun, relaxed and natural photoshoots

Why we need family portraits

Photographs are so much more than just pictures. An amazing family photography session isn’t just about capturing a posed photograph for Grandparents. It’s about taking time to document your family history, memorialise your children’s childhood, capture your love as a family.

Time really does fly… One minute you’ve got a newborn in your arms, and the next – secondary school, then college. Please make sure you take time out to capture those memories, all the precious moments and ages. Take time to document your family's love for each other and put it on your wall or in an album to be treasured.
the photos are phenomenal
I could not be happier with the photos that followed our session. The morning of the shoot was a particularly frosty -6°C, Rebecca very quickly struck up a warm and friendly rapport with my 3-year-old. It helped that Rebecca clearly knew the location well, and the best spots for a great backdrop. The session felt like a nice, crisp walk among beautiful surroundings. The photos are phenomenal and have only increased my admiration for the photography profession. Put your smartphone camera away and book a session with Rebecca, you will not regret it!

What you’ll love about working with me

I totally understand how crazy day to day life can be – I’m a mum of three! Whether you’re in the throes of toddlerhood or dealing with the rollercoaster of raising teens – I understand how intense it can be. The parenting journey is such a bizarre mix of LONG nights are really very quick years. Blink and they’re on the way to college.

One day you will be thankful that you took time to capture these memories, so you could enjoy them for years to come.

However, inviting a stranger into your busy life is a big thing! You want the whole thing to be easy, relaxed and fun. You want everyone to enjoy the process, and you want to look back on your family photoshoot with really happy memories.

You need a family photographer who totally understands if the house is a disaster zone, your teen isn’t cooperating, or your toddler is having a meltdown.

I am that family photographer. Every single client who works with me says that what they loved most was my relaxed, warm and fun nature. I enter your family like a close friend – someone who accepts you exactly where you’re at, someone who brings calm and experience. If everyone needs someone to hype them up and make them laugh – I’ll be your comedian. If everyone needs reassurance and a slower pace – I’m the queen of calm.

A Family Photoshoot with me is always easy and fun, leaving you with stunning heart-grabbing images that you’ll be proud to hang on your walls.

What to expect from your Edinburgh family photography session

Booking and preparing for your photography session

If you’d like to book me for your family photography, first we schedule a video or phone call. This provides a chance for us to get to know if we’re a good fit. It’s totally chilled and completely non-salesy. It’s as important to me that you find the right photographer for your family.

During the chat I’ll find out what you’re looking for, I’ll go through how I work in detail and talk through the investment – all to see if it’d work for you.

After our chat I send you a full booking and investment guide, so you can take your time to make your decision. I’ll also send a booking webpage, should you wish to go ahead.

After booking, I’ll post you a full welcome pack which is packed full of information on how to prepare for your family session, including tips on what to wear. There’s even a checklist to make the whole family photoshoot process very easy for you and inspiration boards to help you decide what to wear.

Closer to the time, we’ll also set up a call to check in, confirm locations and answer any questions.

What type of family photo session is right for you? Indoor or outdoors?

For your family photo session, I offer two options: take the photos indoors in your own home, or take them outdoors at a gorgeous Edinburgh location. There are no intimidating, stuffy studio experiences here!

But which is better? Indoor or outdoor? Well, this very much depends.

Your home is a place of familiarity and comfort, so this can be a particularly great location if there’s anyone nervous about the experience. Photographing your family photoshoot in your home produces some gorgeous real-life images. You can bake cookies, make dens, play dress-ups, snuggle on the sofa – all as I capture beautiful images. When I arrive, I’ll find a suitable space in your house – one big window is all I really need! (And no, it doesn’t need to be super-tidy… You should see the state of my house most of the time!)

Outdoor photography has the benefit of beautiful surroundings and backgrounds – especially in our gorgeous Edinburgh. There are so many wonderful Edinburgh locations at our disposal, from glorious beaches to lochs, forests, parks and the beautiful Old Town… There’s no end to the possibilities. On family photo shoots I tend to find children are really relaxed and comfortable outdoors. It allows them to move, play and have fun – all of which I encourage.

Either way, your session can take place wherever is best for you, and we’ll discuss this in detail in the planning. We can always create a combination of at-home and outdoor if that’s what you fancy.

How will the family photoshoot run on the day?

On the day I will meet you at our chosen location, then spend some time catching up and getting to know the other members of your group. If we’re indoors, I’ll spend a bit of time looking for great lighting before we start photographing. If we’re outdoors we’ll go on a nice walk and I’ll capture photos along the way.

When I photograph your family, I want to capture not only a few camera-facing photographs for the grandparents – but plenty of candid, heart-bursting moments as you have fun spending time together. I believe that every family is unique and special, and I enjoy creating images that reflect this.

At every stage I will guide and direct you on exactly what to do and how to interact, you’ll never be left wondering what to do.

But won’t it be awkward? I’m not a big fan of being in front of the camera.

My superpower as a professional photographer is my natural ability to make everyone feel totally comfortable in front of the camera. I provide loads of ideas ahead of the session to help you prepare, and during every step of the photo session, I guide you in exactly what to do and how to do it. You’ll never be left to wonder how to stand, move or interact.

I’m a recovering photo-avoider myself, so I completely understand. I will be there to help and reassure you at all times.

All my clients come away from their session saying how easy it was, how much fun they had and how much they love the special moments I’ve captured.
brought tears to my eyes
I can’t recommend Rebecca Holmes Photography highly enough! She was wonderful, she made it so easy and relaxing. I was able to feed my baby when needed, our toddler had time to run about, there was no rush or posing, yet the photographs are simply stunning. So natural and beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes when I saw them for the first time. We will definitely be engaging Rebecca in future!

Why I do what I do

I’m an award-winning professional photographer with over two decades of experience taking photographs professionally… (why thank you – no, I don’t look that old). I’m an Aussie who moved to Edinburgh to marry a Scot, and who now calls Scotland home. I’m also a wife and mum of three, who loves both good coffee and tasty Scottish gin. I am warm, fun, gentle and really easy going.

I would spend hours as a child pouring over family photo albums and picture frames. I loved learning about who people were, how they lived, who they loved. For me, photographs have always had a magical quality about them… They have the ability to remind us, transport us, capture our imagination and fill our hearts with joy.

I love nothing more than capturing candid, beautiful moments of love between the people I photograph.

Just below are some photos of me and my tribe. I can’t wait to capture your family story.
